for solo piano
I started by imagining the pianist’s hands as two characters on the keyboard, dancing and chasing each other—sometimes playfully, sometimes a bit more intense—getting tangled up and then pulling away. During the creative process the thematic and dramatic episodes revealed the characteristics of a ballade, something I have always wanted to write, so I seized the moment and shaped the music around that narrative framework.
Chase and Tangle was composed for Ying-Chen Kao.
